With winter conditions arriving, the Health and Wellness Center is reminding all community members—especially families with young children—about the dangers of thin or unstable ice. As lakes begin to freeze, ice may appear solid but can be extremely fragile, increasing the risk of falling through and suffering severe injuries such as hypothermia or drowning. Parents are encouraged to speak with their children about staying away from the lake, cabins, deep ditches, and other large bodies of water, even if ice looks thick. Please promote safe alternatives for outdoor play, such as sliding in designated areas or playing hockey or broomball on safe surfaces. A safe winter season starts with awareness and prevention.
