The Health and Wellness Center is alerting parents and community members about a dangerous activity known as the “Choking Game” or “Blackout Challenge.” This involves intentionally cutting off oxygen to the brain to experience a brief “high.” It has recently circulated among youth through social media platforms.
Why is it dangerous?
This is not a harmless game. Oxygen deprivation can cause loss of consciousness, seizures, brain injury, and even death. Just a few seconds without oxygen can lead to serious, permanent harm.
What can parents and community members do?
Start a conversation: Ask your child if they’ve seen or heard about this challenge.
Explain the risks: Cutting off oxygen to the brain is extremely dangerous.
Monitor online activity: Stay aware of social media trends and what your child is viewing.
Seek help: If you suspect involvement or risk-taking behaviour, contact the school or a healthcare professional.
The “Choking Game” is not a game — it’s a life-threatening behaviour. Awareness and early conversations can prevent tragedy. Let’s work together to provide our children a safe, healthy environment through prevention and open communication.
